Can AI Overcome its Bias? Understanding the Challenges of New Technology

06 Feb 2024
ICC Capital Suite
Safer Gaming Workshop

Despite widespread adoption, visibility into operators’ AI approaches is severely lacking and there are currently no comprehensive policies to guide the growing use of its capabilities. This raises a number of ethical concerns around the implementation of advanced technology like facial recognition and behaviour detection systems. Two of the major challenges are accuracy and the potential for bias, given that the algorithms that power them are trained on vast amounts of data, which can inadvertently contain shortcomings by their human inputs. This session explores the KYC, ID verification and false flag challenges of using AI for player protection and promoting responsible gaming.

• How far along are operators in using AI tools as part of their safer gambling strategies?
• Why is facial recognition a controversial topic for casinos? Balancing transparency, player safety and business security.
• What can the gaming industry learn from other tech-heavy sectors? Steps that might be taken to ensure better and fairer outcomes free of bias.
