DEBATE: Are Right-Wing Governments’ a Friend or Foe to Casinos?
Between bets on convictions, cabinet picks - and let’s hope not another bankruptcy - the return of Donald Trump for some has turned American politics into a casino. Ill-timed jokes aside, with a wave of conservative populist governments hitting Europe and North America, which side of the aisle is best for casino operators? On the one hand conservatives in the US are seen to promote business while the left put in place restrictions, yet in other geos like the Netherlands, the religious right is those behind the push for higher taxes and limitations on product offering, while it was the UK’s Labour party, now back in power, who opened the way for additional land-based and online licences. With so many contradictions and differing opinions on whether gaming policy falls down party lines, IS there even a relationship to begin with on whichever political party holds office, and the fortunes of the local industry?
