‘Deep payments’: The new reality of cross border purchases

For consumers, the world of cross border payments has never appeared more seamless. Payment providers, however, know the reality has never been more complex.

In Latin America, cross border payments are rising by 10% YoY and international online sales by 34%. And with this growth comes new consumer expectations. We’ve learnt to disregard geography when finding the best products, prices, and services - it’s all just a click away. But for companies, the same increase of cross border purchases brings a whole new dimension of challenges.

We believe the unique demands underpinning this new ‘borderless’ economy require a whole new approach when it comes to processing cross border purchases and transactions, one we call ‘Deep Payments’.

Deep Payments reveals the web of obstacles, risks, regulations, and costs beneath every smooth transaction. And as cross border trade increases, only the companies that understand and take advantage of this new reality will be able to continue offering their customers the same experience of a borderless world.

The three engines of Deep Payment - technology, insights, relationships:

1. Technology

The first thing online payments must be - before convenient, fast, and intuitive - is secure. Even though they don’t see it, there can be no doubt in the customer’s mind that each transaction is safeguarded by a robust infrastructure of the latest technologies. Deep Payments recognises this need for payment providers to understand and implement a host of state-of-the-art tools, such as AI-powered processing, KYC identity verification, mapping of local databases and fraud prevention - all of which must happen instantly to make not just the transaction, but the entire payment process as frictionless as it is secure.

2. Insights

In Latin America alone there are thirty-three countries, each with its own unique payment systems, regulations, and levels of technological maturity. Add to this the widely varying customer preferences influenced by geography, income, gender and age. Local customs and social norms drive preferences for discounts, loyalty points, or installment plans. Deep Payments is the understanding that the local nuances and behavioral shifts affect every link of a transaction, and these insights must inform the most relevant solutions for both consumers and merchants.

3. Relationships

A smooth cross border payment can only be maintained through strong links between all stakeholders - from merchants to banks, brokers and regulators. But more than this, payment providers must treat each interpersonal relationship as a crucial two-way asset. Because when things go wrong, they need to know about it in order to fix it. And when things go right, it’s the result of thousands of successful and mutually supportive relationships. Each hidden relationship along the value chain is crucial for ensuring alignment and smooth operation within the Deep Payment ecosystem.

In short, cross border payments are much more than merely transactional. The only payments that will continue to offer the same unbeatable customer experience are those that can afford to be deep payments: borderless and seamless on the surface, but powered by the hidden engines of technology, insights and relationships.
